The case for epigenetic inheritance in evolution

چکیده

It is commonly thought that genotype is a property assignable exclusively to the nucleic acid genome while phenotype is a property whose assignment must be distributed among entities at many or all levels of biological organization. In evolutionary biology there is a problem of hierarchy in the theory of selection due to this requirement for distributive assignment: to which level(s) is the cause of a particular selective effect to be assigned? There appears to be no comparable perceived problem for theories of inheritance due to the asymmetry of genotype and phenotype. One might argue to the contrary that the genome has an architecture and that linkage, recombination, and gene interaction all point to a hierarchical structure ranging from nucleotides-as-units up to the genome as a whole (Lewontin, 1974). But this hierarchy presents no comparable problem because all of these genomic elements are part of a single inheritance system. The transmission rules used to track nucleotides are the same ones used to track larger genomic elements. In the narrowest sense, then, genotype means DNA (or RNA) sequence. Phenotypes are various, embodying all the morphologies, physiologies, and behaviors of living things. As such, phenotypes are the direct targets or subjects of natural selection and genotypes are the direct subjects of inheritance. However, the evolution of phenotypes depends not only on selection but also on their relation to genotypes that can be transmitted (or reconstituted) in inheritance. Selection without an appropriate genotype-phenotype relation does not result in an evolutionary response. Evolution by natural selection depends on inheritance and selection in equal measures. Belief that the asymmetry of genotype and phenotype is fundamental is reinforced by the fact that the mechanism of nucleic acid-based heredity is so well understood and provides such an exquisite explanation of the genotype-phenotype mapping. Although much is unknown about the details of the ‘‘epi-genetic’’ mapping beyond the primary coding of amino acid sequence, no other known

Onm-19: Role of Epigenetic in Transgenerarional Disease

Epigenetic alterations have been related to many biological processes and disease; however, the global epigenetic status of most cell types has not been investigated yet in detail. The ability of environmental factors to promote a phenotype or disease state not only in the individual exposed but also in subsequent progeny for successive generations is termed transgenerational inheritance. The m...

P 110: Evaluating the Role of Histone Hyper Acetylation in Induction of Neuroinflammation

Microglia is the effector cell of the innate immune system in central nervous system (CNS). These cells mediate inflammatory responses in injuries. Besides external factors, microglial function is also controlled by internal factors, including epigenetic regulations. Mechanisms of epigenetic regulation mainly consist of DNA methylation, histone modifications and use of non-coding RNAs. Recent s...

Transgenerational epigenetic inheritance: prevalence, mechanisms, and implications for the study of heredity and evolution.

This review describes new developments in the study of transgenerational epigenetic inheritance, a component of epigenetics. We start by examining the basic concepts of the field and the mechanisms that underlie epigenetic inheritance. We present a comprehensive review of transgenerational cellular epigenetic inheritance among different taxa in the form of a table, and discuss the data containe...

The epigenetics of adaptation: focusing on epigenetic stability as an evolving trait.

“Epigenetics” refers to changes in gene expression that occur through changes in DNA methylation, histone modification, small or micro-RNAs, or most inclusively, other mechanisms that alter how DNA sequences are translated into functional gene products. With the discovery that epigenetic modifications to gene expression can be inherited across cell lineages or even across organismal generations...

Epigenetic Inheritance and Its Role in Evolutionary Biology: Re-Evaluation and New Perspectives

Epigenetics increasingly occupies a pivotal position in our understanding of inheritance, natural selection and, perhaps, even evolution. A survey of the PubMed database, however, reveals that the great majority (>93%) of epigenetic papers have an intra-, rather than an inter-generational focus, primarily on mechanisms and disease. Approximately ~1% of epigenetic papers even mention the nexus o...

Transgenerational inheritance or resetting of stress-induced epigenetic modifications: two sides of the same coin

The transgenerational inheritance of stress-induced epigenetic modifications is still controversial. Despite several examples of defense "priming" and induced genetic rearrangements, the involvement and persistence of transgenerational epigenetic modifications is not known to be general. Here I argue that non-transmission of epigenetic marks through meiosis may be regarded as an epigenetic modi...
